Shingles can lead to serious complications

ShinglesAccording to the CDC “Almost 1 out of 3 people in the United States will develop shingles during their lifetime. Most people who get shingles will have it only once. However, it is possible to get it a second or even third time. Your risk of getting shingles increases as you age, especially after age 50.”

That is a sobering statistic that should cause you some pause.  It is inevitable that a great percentage of people will eventually develop shingles, but a smaller segment of that group can develop complications as a result of it.

Common complications can include postherpetic neuralgia, vision loss, neurological problems and skin infections.

  • Postherpetic neuralgia.   This is a condition where the pain continues after the blisters have cleared up.  It occurs because damaged nerve fibers send incorrect messages of pain from your skin to your brain. This complication occurs in about 10-20 percent of shingles sufferers.
  •  Vision loss. When shingles occurs in and around an eye (ophthalmic shingles), it can cause painful eye infections that may result in vision loss.  This is why it is so important to seek medical attention right away if you are developing shingles blisters on your face.
  • Neurological problems. Depending on which nerves are affected, shingles can cause an inflammation of the brain (encephalitis), facial paralysis, or hearing or balance problems.
  • Skin infections.  If shingles blisters aren’t properly treated, bacterial skin infections may develop. This complication is one that may be prevented with the proper care at the first indication of shingles onset.

Shingles is a very serious epidemic among people over 50, and if you develop symptoms you should consult your doctor immediately.   Although there is no cure for shingles, your doctor will give you advice on how to manage your symptoms, such as keeping the rash dry or wearing loose clothing.  In some cases painkillers or anti-viral medications may be prescribed.

You can also use over-the-counter medications such as Shingles Rescue® Plus. Shingles Rescue Plus contains homeopathic components specifically chosen to provide pain relief and healing support and contains herbs selected for their skin-soothing properties.
