What is Strep Throat?
Strep throat is a contagious disease caused by Streptococcal A. bacteria. Symptoms include fever, pain, redness and swelling of the throat and tonsils. Strep throat is more common in children due to proximity of each other in school and at activities. The Strep bacteria are present in the nose and throat. Coughing, sneezing and shaking hands can easily spread the Strep bacteria to others. Hard surfaces such as rails, door knobs and tables can also carry the bacteria if handled by an infected person.
Most cases of sore throat are viral and not strep throat. A viral sore throat will also have symptoms of runny nose, cough, hoarseness, red or runny eyes and diarrhea.
